By category, sex, age and diagnosis

Admissions to hospitals are divided into four categories: adult mental health, adult learning disability, adolescent learning disability, and adolescent mental health. The criteria for each type of hospital, plus the criteria for admission to St. Luke’s 24 Hour Specialist Residential Services, are set out below.

Adult mental health hospitals Adult learning disability hospitals Adolescent learning disability hospitals Adolescent mental health hospitals
  • Age 18-65
  • Male or female
  • Diagnosis of mental illness / personality disorder / Aspergers syndrome
  • May have dual diagnosis
  • May have forensic history
  • Liable to detention under the Mental Health Act 1983 (including Section 41)
  • Age 18-65
  • Male or female
  • A diagnosis of learning disability or brain injury
  • May also suffer from a mental illness, personality disorder or challenging behaviour
  • May require a period of highly specialised assessment and treatment
  • May require long-term rehabilitation
  • May or may not be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (including Section 41)
  • May have a forensic history
  • Age 12-18
  • Male
  • A diagnosis of Learning Disability
  • May present risk of aggression, sexually inappropriate behaviour, property damage, risk of self harm
  • May require a period of highly specialised assessment and treatment
  • May require long-term rehabilitation
  • Liable to detention under the Mental Health Act 1983 (including Section 41)
  • May have a forensic history
  • Age 12-18
  • Male or female
  • A diagnosis of mental illness or borderline learning disability
  • May present risk of aggression, sexually inappropriate behaviour, property damage, risk of self harm
  • May have history of offending behaviour
  • May require detention under the Mental Health Act 1983 (including Section 41)

24 Hour Specialist Residential Services
  • Age 18-65
  • Male or female
  • History of learning disabilities and/or mental illness and/or autistic spectrum disorder
  • May be on CTO (Community Treatment Order)
  • Risk profile does not warrant admission to hospital environment
