Thors Park

Thors Park is an Independent Low Secure Hospital Unit providing a complex care environment for the assessment and treatment of patients who have learning disabilities and mental health needs compounded with challenging behaviour.

The unit admits both male and female patients between the ages of 18 and 65 and can take those detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. Longer-term rehabilitation beds can also be provided.

Just twelve miles from Colchester, and set in over thirty acres of land, Thors Park lends itself well to a therapeutic programme designed to improve physical, sensory and educational experiences and skills.

On site at Thors Park a variety of activities are on offer, including an assault course, cycling, trampolines, fishing, literacy and numeracy and a range of community activities.

Thors Park is a purpose built U-shaped building comprising two wings with fifteen en-suite bedrooms and three lounge areas with the convenience of enclosed gardens. The unit has large communal areas, including a dining area and an activity room. There is an on-site activity centre with a swimming pool.

Thors Park is located on a rural site, providing a tranquil and spacious environment. Thors Park is situated in the village of Thorrington, located within the Tendring administrative district, midway between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea and a relatively short distance from Brightlingsea.

Admissions criteria

Thors Park admits males and females aged 18-65 with a diagnosis of learning disability or brain injury, who may also suffer from mental illness, personality disorder or challenging behaviour.

In addition, patients may require highly specialised treatment and care, possibly for extended periods of time. Some of our patients have a forensic history, and may or may not be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (sections 2,3,37,37/41).

Clinical team

Therapy is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including: consultant psychiatrist, associate specialist psychiatrist, registered nurses, psychologist, occupational therapist and social workers. Programmes are individually tailored and focused on assessment followed by treatment and intensive rehabilitation.
